Gulf Events

News of events related to Gulf of Mexico science and education (e.g., meetings, conferences).

GOMURC will coordinate a workshop on February 5, 1-5pm, during the GOMOSES Conference in New Orleans, entitled, "Examining the 1990 Oil Pollution Act to improve the governmental and scientific response to future oil spill events." Our purpose is to capture lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DHOS) that can be used to improve OPA when the opportunity arises. The workshop summary is located  here

Panelists and audience feedback will address three objectives: 1) Educate participants about OPA history and intent; 2) What are the priority science and research needs for responding to a spill like DHOS and how did OPA succeed or fail to address these needs?; and 3) What are longer term legal and social issues that may be improved in OPA?

The workshop will be held at the Hyatt Regency, New Orleans, LA, Celestin F Room.  Attendance is open and you DO NOT have to register for the conference to attend. We hope to see you there!

The Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science (GoMOSES) conference program is now available! The conference will be held February 5-8, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans. The conference schedule includes a summary plenary about Gulf research and restoration, a closing plenary concerning the future of the conference, and an array of oral and poster sessions, and workshops.

ACT NOW to get early bird registration (ends Nov. 30) and reserve hotel room (it is week before Mardis Gras so rooms may be tight in NOLA!).

Registration for the 2018 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science (GOMOSES) conference has commenced-- register here. As described on the conference site, the title this year is "Response, Restoration, and Resiliency in the Gulf."

Since its inception in 2013, the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference (GoMOSES) has sought to link fundamental research on the Gulf ecosystem to practical application. The 2018 theme, “Response, Restoration, and Resiliency in the Gulf,” continues this trend, exploring how fundamental science can help restore and maintain Gulf ecosystem integrity, inform response strategies, and strengthen resilience. This year’s program will also emphasize cross-cutting discussions among academics, industry, government agencies, and public interest organizations.

Hurricane Harvey impacts will be felt for years to come.  Texas Sea Grant created an online webpage for post-disaster recovery resources. The posted websites, publications and videos were developed by other Sea Grant programs and state and regional agencies. The page will be updated as new information is made available and vetted.

AL.com offers an excellent summary of other ways we can all help out Gulf neighbors!
