The Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA) is seeking a professional to serve as our Regional Coastal Ocean Observing System (RCOOS) Manager.

Primary Job Duties include:

 

  • Completing and maintaining a build-out plan for SECOORA’s RCOOS
  • Leading and managing the RCOOS
  • Leading and managing SECOORA’s Data Management and Communications
  • Supporting proposal development, member recruitment, and identification of funding opportunities
  • Supporting SECOORA operations, especially IT, and other technical needs.

The Membership Committee of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS) is seeking nominations for the organization's Board of Directors. GCOOS is the heart of data collection for the ocean and coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico -- collecting thousands of data points from sensors and ensuring the data are reliable, timely, accurate and available to all who need it.

Nominations are due by March 3, 2017. See here for details of the Board responsibilities and how to make nominations.

A Notice of Intent to solicit public input and prepare a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the expansion of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary was published in the Federal Register.  You can find the Federal Register notice here.

Public comments related to this action must be received by April 6, 2015.

A final version of the science plan is anticipated for release in January 2015.

BOEM preparing a supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for proposed lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico off the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, beginning with Central Planning Area (CPA) Lease Sale 241 in 2016, Eastern Planning Area (EPA) Lease Sale 226 in 2016, and CPA Sale 247 in 2017.  EPA 226 site is south of FL panhandle. S.1254: Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Amendments Act of 2014 was signed by President on June 30. Authorizes over $20M to include maintaining and enhancing "a national harmful algal bloom and hypoxia program" -- bill at https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/s1254/text. House passed H.R. 2431: National Integrated Drought Information System Reauthorization Act of 2013, "a collaborative effort between numerous federal agencies and several state governments to provide a dynamic and accessible drought-risk information system." Governor Scott assigns Gulf Consortium (http://www.fl-counties.com/advocacy/gulf-consortium) with task of developing State Expenditure Plan for RESTORE Act section 1603, Spill Impact Component ("pot 3") 30% that must be approved by Gulf Ecosystem Restoration Council and mesh with their Council's Comprehensive Restoration Plan funding.

Amends the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act to provide that Gulf States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida have exclusive fishery management authority over reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico in waters that, on average, are 20 fathoms or less in depth, and for other purposes.
