ATLONTIS- Using decommissioned oil platforms for science

Posted by on in Gulf Science and Education
In 2013, over 12% of 3000 oil platforms in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico were decommissioned and targeted for removal or reef creation (BSEE 2016); 100-300 are decommissioned each year! The ATLONTIS Project is an alliance of public and private organizations considering the use and re-purposing of decommissioned oil and gas platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico for scientific research and monitoring. The new science base may be located in the northern Gulf Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lease areas out to 1000 meters of water depth. We ask for your assistance in assessing interest and potential applications for conversion and operation of an OCS oil/gas platform for support for scientific research and environmental monitoring.

Thank you for your attention and response to our short survey.
